ABC Marathon Goals
Share
A marathon training framework that helps runners stay motivated by setting multiple tiers of goals, preventing mental collapse if the primary goal becomes unattainable.
Core Concept
- Set 3 distinct goals for any race or major challenge
- Prevents complete mental breakdown if primary goal becomes unreachable
- Provides fallback targets to maintain motivation
- Originally designed for marathon running but applicable to any goal
The Three Goal Structure
- A Goal (Primary Target)
- Your main objective/stretch goal
- The ideal outcome you're training for
- Example: Running a sub-3 hour marathon
- B Goal (Secondary Target)
- Slightly less ambitious but still challenging
- Acts as first fallback if A goal becomes unreachable
- Still represents significant achievement
- C Goal (Completion Goal)
- Most basic acceptable outcome
- Usually focused on completion
- Example: "Just finish the race"
- Provides final motivation when all else fails
Benefits of Framework
- Maintains motivation throughout long events
- Prevents giving up when primary goal becomes unreachable
- Helps manage mental state during challenging moments
- Creates realistic expectations while maintaining ambition
- Allows for adaptation to unexpected circumstances
Applications Beyond Racing
- Can be applied to:
- Daily fitness goals
- Work projects
- Personal development
- Any long-term challenge
- Examples:
- A Goal: Full workout
- B Goal: Modified version
- C Goal: 15 minutes of movement
Key Implementation Points
- Set goals before starting the challenge
- Make goals specific and measurable
- Keep C goal achievable even in worst circumstances
- Use as mental framework during difficult moments
- Accept that perfect conditions rarely exist
