Jamie Beaton's University Success

Sam Parr shares the story of Jamie Beaton, a remarkable student from New Zealand who built a massive education company.

"Jamie Beaton was raised by a single mother in New Zealand. He got obsessed with school, particularly with university applications. He set out to become the most qualified high school student in New Zealand and created an in-depth strategy.

He started two businesses - a newspaper delivery business and an iPhone repair business. He strategically picked activities he could excel in, focused on maximizing validation through contests, and maintained straight A's. By age 17, he was accepted into 25 universities including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Columbia, Cambridge, and Duke.

Word spread in New Zealand about this wonder kid, and he even hosted a 230-person talk where parents wanted to learn his methods. Today at 29, he has 7 degrees and 1 PhD - including a bachelor's and master's in applied math from Harvard, a PhD in public policy from Oxford, two masters from Stanford, a master's in entrepreneurship from Penn, a masters from Princeton, a law degree from Yale, and a masters in global affairs from a university in China.

While he was a sophomore at college, he started a tutoring business called Crimson Education. By sophomore year, it was doing $1 million in revenue. He was interning at Tiger Management, and his boss encouraged him to go all in on the business. Today, Crimson Education does $120-150 million in revenue, is valued around $500 million, has about 1,000 employees, and helps kids get into top universities. Parents spend around $200,000 a year for their services, starting as early as 5th or 6th grade."
