Tokyo Blind Date Viral
Share
A story about how Nick Gray created a viral marketing moment by publicly documenting a blind date trip to Tokyo.
"Nick tweeted out last week saying 'I want to go on a blind date and I want to go to Tokyo next weekend.' He listed the qualifications: if you're a woman with a passport who likes sushi and Japanese food and can ride a bike in a big city, let's go. He offered to pay for everything, but in return, they had to film stupid videos of him for his socials.
He put out an application on Google Docs and got 400 women applying. He sorted through the listings, sent me his top five and top ten, and did calls with them to figure out if it was a 'culture fit.'
The original tweet got 2 million views. He started documenting everything - picking up flowers, going to the airport, scheduling ramen dinners. Each tweet was getting hundreds of thousands or millions of views. People started reaching out from all over Japan offering to host them at restaurants. They've extended the date from a couple days to 5-6 days now.
Netflix and Amazon have reached out about doing a show. It's become one of the most viral things I've seen about such a weird topic. People are so invested - I've got so many people messaging me saying 'Are you following what Nick just did? Nick just shared that the date's going well!'"
