Roommate Sobriety Support

Sam shares how telling his roommates about his alcoholism was a turning point in his sobriety journey.

"I eventually told my roommates and said 'Hey guys, I've got a drinking issue. You can live your life the way you want to live your life and I'm not gonna judge you. I'm totally fine with you guys doing what you want to do, but from this point on I'm sober and I'm not gonna drink alcohol. I would love it if you could encourage me.'

I felt like the biggest weight lifted off my shoulders. When I felt that weight go away, it became so much easier. I had no problem after that telling a bunch of other friends. A few of my friends at the time bailed on me and I was bummed for a minute. Then I thought 'You know what, if they're willing to bail on me over this, then fuck them - I don't want to be friends with those guys anyway.'

It felt amazing to be able to talk about this with people. I've talked to many other people who struggled with this, and a common feature when trying to break any addiction or habit is they don't talk about it because they're embarrassed. I found that talking about it makes me not embarrassed because a lot of other people struggle with this stuff."
