Michelin Ratings Drive Sales
Share
Sam Parr shares the origin story of how the prestigious Michelin Star restaurant ratings began as a marketing scheme to sell tires.
"Michelin Star restaurants - it's become the standard of what is good dining. Well, Michelin Tires created that. They created a guide on restaurants when cars started becoming popular. Michelin had been around since before cars, making rubber for all types of things.
Their thinking was 'People need to get out and travel the world and see all these amazing things.' So they created ratings: 'Look at all these restaurants - this one we rate one star, you should go see it. But this one's 4 star, you have to go see it. And if you do happen to go see it, make sure that you use our tires.'
That's how Michelin Stars got started. There's a whole bunch of examples like that where these marketing schemes have become their own thing."
