A story about how the RxBar founder started his company with tough love from his dad, bootstrapped to a $600M exit, and is now starting another protein bar company.

"The RxBar founder was obsessed with CrossFit and in 2013 noticed they didn't sell any paleo snacks at the time. He goes to his dad and says 'Dad, do you know any investors? I want to start this bar company.' His dad literally says 'You need to shut the fuck up and go sell some bars if you want to start a bar company.' Told him to go sell 1,000 bars.

He wasn't good at school, so when he was failing with the business he was comfortable. He had been a failure at school so he didn't doubt himself or second guess it. His first business was actually selling weed in high school.

They didn't raise any money - bootstrapped the whole way. He said it was a blessing because they were forced to focus on the one important thing: selling bars. They would email, call, give bars out on consignment, do anything to sell more bars.

First 9 months they did $600K, first year $2M, year two $6M, year three $36M, year four $161M, then sold to Kellogg for $600M.

After the sale, there was an article about him being bored and lonely, showing him sitting alone in a lawn chair in front of his mansion in the middle of the day. Now that his non-compete has ended, he's back with a new protein bar called the David Bar."
