MeatEater's $100M Growth

A story about how Steve Rinella transformed from an outdoor magazine writer into the founder of a $100M lifestyle brand.

"Steve Rinella originally starts as a magazine article guy for Outdoor Magazine. He's from Michigan, went to school in Montana, loves the outdoors and writing, so he starts as a freelance journalist working for Outdoor Magazine and Men's Health.

His first book was about foraging - he wanted to write about how he hunted and foraged his own Thanksgiving dinner. His second book was called American Buffalo, about hunting buffalo and their importance to American history.

The books got pretty popular, so he creates MeatEater.com. It starts as a series of podcasts and they have a show on the sports channel. Eventually Chernin invests in it. By 2023, MeatEater becomes a website where Rinella blogs about outdoors, publishes books under the MeatEater name, has recipe books, podcasts, and newsletters.

They went and bought a bunch of brands - they bought a duck call business, a clothing line. In 2023, they announced they did $100 million in revenue from selling all of the products on MeatEater.com, where he gets a lot of the traffic from his books and podcasts."
