Energy Audit Framework
Share
Tim Ferriss shares his approach to evaluating activities and projects based on their energy impact, both for himself and others.
Core Energy Evaluation Principles
- Energy in/energy out is a fundamental currency to track
- Activities should be evaluated based on whether you have more or less energy afterward
- Consider energy impact on all parties involved, not just yourself
- Energy levels affect performance across all areas of life
Project Selection Criteria
- Look for projects that can be successes even if they fail short-term
- Focus on developing:
- Durable relationships
- Valuable skills
- Experiences that compound over time
- Avoid projects that drain energy, even if they seem profitable
- Choose weird/unconventional projects that:
- Are easier for you than others
- Generate sustained enthusiasm
- Allow for greater endurance
Implementation Strategy
- Create a "menu" of things to try/learn
- Prioritize activities that:
- Plug you into energy (like "charging an iPhone")
- Transfer benefits to other areas
- Allow for experimentation
- Start small with discrete, measurable goals
- Example: "Do 6 episodes" vs "Change the world"
- Pay attention to energy levels after activities
- Be willing to abandon energy-draining commitments
Warning Signs
- Being constantly busy without purpose
- Engaging in indiscriminate action
- Committing to things just to avoid feeling uncomfortable
- Getting trapped in projects that "eat up years"
- Ignoring energy drain because something is "reliably profitable"
Recovery and Recharge
- Make time for creative outlets
- Include physical activities that require presence
- Allow for experimentation and improvisation
- Build in recovery periods
- Don't feel guilty about taking time for energy-giving activities
The framework emphasizes choosing activities based on energy impact rather than just efficiency or conventional metrics of success.
