Share
A framework explaining the emotional journey men experience through fatherhood, from initial desire through the reality of having children.
The Three Phases of Fatherhood
- Phase One: "I Want Kids"
- Initial excitement and certainty about wanting children
- Confident about the decision to become a parent
- Phase Two: "I Want Kids...?" (During Pregnancy)
- Period of uncertainty and questioning
- Anxiety and doubt about the decision
- Natural feelings of panic and freaking out
- Phase Three: "I Can't Live Without Kids" (12-18 months after birth)
- Typically emerges between 12-18 months after birth
- Triggered when baby starts showing personality (smiling, laughing, crawling)
- Deep emotional attachment develops
- Complete shift in perspective about life with children
Common Early Fatherhood Experience
- Initial period feels anticlimactic for many fathers
- Dads often feel useless in early months
- Most men experience caring without being "in love" initially
- Normal to question emotional connection early on
- 70% of fathers report not feeling immediate deep love
- Takes 8-10 months for many to develop strong emotional bonds
Practical Advice for New Fathers
- Lower expectations about immediate emotional connection
- Understand delayed bonding is normal and common
- Focus on supporting mother in early months
- Prepare physically more than mentally
- Practice daily tasks while holding weight (15lb dumbbell)
- Don't bother "banking sleep" beforehand - it doesn't work
- For crying babies (0-3 months):
- Swaddle extremely tight
- Hold sideways
- Loud shushing in ear
