80/20 Creation Ratio
Share
A philosophy about the importance of creating vs consuming content, and how it applies to relationships and personal growth.
Core Philosophy
- Good friends consume together, great friends create together
- Aim for 80% creation, 20% consumption in content-focused time
- Evaluate relationships based on creation vs consumption ratio
Relationship Assessment
- Look at how time is spent in relationships:
- Consuming: Going to restaurants, watching movies, scrolling feeds
- Creating: Cooking together, making music, building projects
- Better relationships tend to have more creation-focused activities
- Quality of friendship can be measured by creation/consumption ratio
Content Creation Approach
- Most people consume 99% of the time ("mouth open ingesting")
- Goal should be to create 80% of the time
- Only consume content that helps fuel creation
- Acknowledge consumption is addictive (scrolling feeds) but limit it
Building Community Through Creation
- Find others trying to do similar difficult things
- Share strategies and commiserate with peers
- Learn from mentors who have succeeded
- Build rapport through shared creative challenges
- Focus on learning what works from others while maintaining your own path
Implementation
- Recognize when you're just consuming vs creating
- Actively seek opportunities to create with friends
- Don't just watch YouTube - make videos
- Don't just listen to music - make music
- Focus on projects that involve active creation
The key message is that meaningful relationships and personal growth come from creating together rather than just consuming together.
