Input Control Framework

A framework for controlling various inputs in your life to lead a better, more intentional existence. Based on Shaan Puri's discussion about managing different aspects of life inputs.

Core Philosophy

  • Control inputs across all facets of life for better outcomes
  • Most underrated skill for leading a good life
  • Focus on intentional choices rather than passive consumption

Key Areas of Input Control

Food & Consumption

  • Control what you put in your mouth
  • Make conscious choices about diet
  • Be intentional about what you consume

Information

  • Limit news consumption
  • No news apps on phone
  • Allow some news to naturally filter through but don't actively seek it
  • Focus on books over current events for entertainment
  • Control social media intake

Relationships

  • Control who you let into your world
  • Be selective about relationships
  • Manage the people you spend time with

Problems

  • Control which problems you make your own
  • Don't take on every issue
  • Be selective about what you consider "your problem"

Implementation Strategy

  • Start with physical distance (e.g., keeping phone in drawer)
  • Allow controlled access to restricted items (can use computer instead of phone)
  • Create friction between you and unwanted inputs
  • Focus on governing yourself before trying to govern others

Benefits

  • More peaceful existence
  • Better mental state
  • More intentional living
  • Reduced anxiety
  • More time for meaningful activities
  • Improved focus on what matters

Practical Example

  • No phone weekend experiment
    • Put phone in drawer
    • Allowed computer use
    • Created physical distance from constant connectivity
    • Led to more present moments
    • Showed addiction-like withdrawal symptoms
    • Resulted in more peaceful, slower-paced experience
