Yes-And Conversation Method
Share
The "Yes-And" technique is a conversational method where you agree with someone's statement but then redirect the conversation in your preferred direction. Here's how it works based on the podcast discussion.
Core Concept
- Appear to agree with what someone says ("Yes")
- Then completely change direction to what you actually want to discuss ("And")
- Creates illusion of agreement while pursuing your own agenda
Real Examples from Podcast
- When discussing dinner plans:
- Person A: "What do you want to eat?"
- Person B: "Well I had Thai for lunch"
- Person A: "Thai! That's a great idea, I'm so glad you said Thai" (Even though B never suggested Thai)
Key Benefits
- Can't be argued with easily since you're technically agreeing
- Maintains conversation flow without direct disagreement
- If called out, can claim you're just building on their idea
- Helps avoid being a "buzzkill" or stopping conversational momentum
Strategic Usage
- Best used when you want to redirect conversation
- Works well in brainstorming scenarios
- Can be used to take control of discussion direction
- Particularly effective in business/creative contexts
Potential Drawback
- Can be obvious if overused
- May frustrate others who notice the pattern
- Could be seen as manipulative if used too frequently
The technique essentially allows you to control conversation direction while maintaining apparent agreement with others' input.
