Quarterly Goal Reset

A framework for living an "unscheduled life" while maintaining productivity and intentionality through quarterly goal setting and calendar management.

Core Philosophy of the Unscheduled Life

  • Do the most important or interesting thing right now, not what was scheduled weeks ago
  • Focus on effectiveness over efficiency
  • Make the "big thing" the first thing you do each day
  • Break days into 90-minute to 2-hour "sprints" for focused work

Calendar Management Principles

  • Delete recurring meetings and unnecessary commitments
  • Keep large blocks of open time for spontaneous opportunities
  • Use "blocks of time" instead of scheduled meetings
    • Morning sprint
    • Afternoon sprint
    • Night sprint (for night owls)
  • Only schedule what's truly essential

Priority Setting Process

  • Review priorities quarterly to avoid "sleepwalking through life"
  • Ask yourself daily: "What's the ONE thing that would make today a win?"
  • Don't use calendar as a to-do list
  • Focus on 2-3 major priorities at a time
  • Evaluate calendar alignment with stated priorities
    • "Show me your calendar and I'll show you your priorities"

Relationship Management

  • Use the "barbell strategy" for relationships:
    • Lots of quick, lightweight text messages
    • Few but deep, full-day in-person meetings
  • Accept there will be trade-offs
    • Some people won't like the unresponsiveness
    • Not compatible with highly scheduled people
    • Requires comfort with saying no or not responding

Implementation Timeline

  • Start with one "sacred" day per week
  • Gradually expand to multiple days
  • Full transition can take 8-10 years
  • Work towards roles and positions that enable this lifestyle
