MFM Basketball Camp Evolution

A story about how Shaan Puri created Camp MFM, an exclusive basketball camp for entrepreneurs, which started from a simple Twitter post.

"Ben asked me why don't I host an event or conference. I said yes, but I had two problems: I don't really like big groups of people, and conferences are kind of boring. Instead of saying no, I asked myself what would be the event that I would love to go to.

I realized I would want something like a summer camp for adults - like the basketball camps I used to go to in summers. Something super fun where we play, compete, hang out and talk. With just 20 of the most fascinating people I know.

We tried it last year. I tweeted out my dream for an event with 3 bullet points and put out a Google form. 200 people replied, but we only invited one - MrBeast. I didn't even know he followed us. I thought it was a prank when I saw his application. His email was like a Yahoo account with his real name. I didn't even reply at first, then he DMs me saying 'So we're doing this or what?'

We ended up doing it with 27 people. We invited this guy who trains NBA stars like Kyrie Irving and Trae Young - he used to train Kobe. He was our coach for a bunch of out-of-shape business people and entertainers.

This year we made it even smaller - just 17 people. We rotate the group each year because we want to use it as an excuse to meet new people. Now we've got people like Joe from Airbnb coming, who owns the San Antonio Spurs. It's become this annual thing that's exactly what I wanted to create."
